Prof. Rizwan is currently working in the School of Civil &Environmental Engineering, NIT, NUST, Sector H-12, Islamabad. He is rendering services as consulting structural and materials engineer. At NUST he was involved in making accreditation proformae for the UG & PG programs of NUST at H-12 Islamabad campus. He graduated in civil engineering from UET Lahore Pakistan and then obtained his Masters degree in structural engineering from university of surrey, UK. He did his PhD from Technical University, Freiberg, Germany and then a post-doctorate research work was also undertaken at the same University. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Pakistan and has represented IEP during an International Conference on “Space Structures” in China. He is also the vice-President of Pakistan Engineering Congress for the last many terms. He has been awarded gold medals twice by the Pakistan Engineering Congress (Kennedy’s medal and Congress Medal) for the out standing research papers published in the proceedings of Pakistan Engineering Congress. He has arranged various successful international colloquia, conferences and symposia. He is the author of two text books meant for undergraduate and post-graduate students in Civil & Architectural Engineering. He served UET Lahore for many years and then Joined NUST as Professor of Civil Engineering in May; 2008.He had another assignment at UET Lahore. It was the additional post of Director Planning & Development. The branch under his leadership prepared four PC-1’s for its five campuses (main campus, Kalashahkaku, Rachna, RCET& Faisalabad).he was responsible for the faculty Development Program. Allocations & Procurement of equipment for all campuses in addition to taking part in meetings /presentations at HEC/ Planning Commission and in the Governor House of the Punjab Province. He served UET’s teaching staff association in various capacities and fought for the betterment of service conditions of teachers. He has already appeared on live TV professional talks, along with world’s leading experts, held by various TV channels (CNBC, Prime and VOI).
He has rendered consulting services in the fields of Structural Engineering and Advanced Concrete Engineering for companies in Pakistan and abroad. He is a consulting structural and material engineer. Probably he is the only trained material engineer with structural engineering background. His post-graduate education has been in Europe. He is a vastly traveled man.
He has been elected as member Executive Committee of Pakistan Engineering Council for two terms i.e. 1993-1996 & 1996-1999. During the second tenure he was elected as the Convener of the Accreditation Committee of the Pakistan Engineering Council.
As Convener, he put in tremendous professional efforts in maintaining the standards of engineering education in Pakistan. He maintained a tough line towards the inadequate and weak engineering Programs of various colleges and universities in Pakistan and was thus able to curb the mush-room growth of private engineering institutions which mainly aimed at minting money from the students of that time. During his tenure, the rules of business of accreditation committee were developed. His team under his leadership developed guidelines for setting engineering program in Pakistan. He exerted hard to update the AC-1 and AC-2 proformae used for the evaluation of engineering programs in Pakistan in addition to developing guidelines for filling AC-1 and AC-2 proformae. He was the youngest and the first Convener of the Accreditation Committee of the PEC who established ranking of various disciplines of the engineering universities of Pakistan. He visited Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan as a member/head of two member PEC delegations to see the standards of engineering education in those countries as lots of Pakistani students used to graduate from such places. He made far reaching recommendation regarding Pakistani graduates in various disciplines returning home from these countries. He has also been the resource person for the three day seminar on “High Rise Buildings and High Performance Concrete conducted by PEC towards CPD of engineers of the country.
He has produced about forty research papers which have been published in the world class journals and at various International conferences. This has been really an outstanding example of “addition and advancement in the existing global knowledge” in his areas of expertise. He has been an extra-ordinary Civil Engineer of this country who rendered multi-dimensional time consuming professional volunteer services affecting his health and family commitments.
During his PhD, he was able to master the latest technology of “Self-Compacting Concrete” and apply it in the laboratory, at the plant site and then made underground placements of SCC in Germany in a local tunnel of teaching mine as a member of local German team of professionals. This was a project sponsored by German Railways. He has published his research in the top American and European journals including ACI Materials Journal. Based on his published work abroad he was taken on the ACI (American Concrete Institute) Committee 237 on “Self-Consolidating Concrete” which is a very big honor for the NUST, PEC and Pakistan. He is the only Pakistani to be on any of the ACI’s Committees. He is also one of the elite professors of the World’s peer reviewer’s panel of the prestigious ACI Materials Journal and he renders the services of the evaluation of the research papers submitted by authors of the World to this journal for publication.
He plans to leave for Germany in summer for three months to make post-doctoral research in order to remain alive at the very competitive top International level.
